Tierrasanta Village of San Diego provides a support network of services and resources and social, educational and cultural programs that enhance living on the hill for residents aged 50+. Members are able to live healthy, happy, meaningful and successful lives in the comfort of their own homes while they enjoy the culture of San Diego lifestyle. TVSD is part of a national movement of Villages to address services and programs to help people as they age in their own communities. With a focus on active daily life through exercise classes, wellness seminars, social gatherings and travel and an attention to basic needs such as household and home maintenance, transportation, errands as well as medical care and assisted living at home, TVSD is a community collaboration that is leading the nation in providing for older adults.
Using the acclaimed Time Bank Model, members can provide for one another above and beyond using their special talents. Time Banking is a win-win model for enhancing Village services. Many of these services are included in the Village membership fee and others are offered by vetted, discounted providers.
Daily exercise classes in the morning or early afternoon rev of the pace of Villagers. Examples include Balance and Mobility, Tai Chi, Yoga and Walking. Then it's on to seminars to fire up discussion in classes such as Village Scholars who study science, art, the brain and more. Legacy Writers is a group of writers who work on their memoirs and critique each other work. Art and crafts classes bring out the inner you as members create special projects for friends such as cards and art to self-reflect i.e. vision boards. Healthier Living Classes are provided through Aging and Independent Services, one of TVSD's premier partners.
The Speakers Series brings in local experts from health, business, financial and more to bring in timely information to keep us connected and active in our community. A monthly Lunch and Learn also features a speaker who speaks on healthier living, caregiving, sacred aging or fall prevention for example as members dine on freshly prepared gourmet meals. Together we might explore local rose growing, the future of long term care in California or watch a film and discuss the history and culture of the widows in India based on the film White Rainbow. TVSD has a health and wellness program that is expanding in 2014.
TVSD has a calendar of events second to none. With the most activities of any Village, there is an average of five events every day of the week. Stop by and see members playing recreational games, bridge, Mah Jongg, Canasta or billiards. Groups of Villagers form to focus on their special interests such as the arts, singing, knitting, book club, and movie watching or singles group. Weekly classic movies top off Friday. Villagers meet each other to dine in local restaurants, for every holiday or just because. Research shows that social activities are key to better living and longevity, and you certainly have that here.
Globe Trippers are members who plan field trips near and far. In 2014 there are day excursions, longer trips and international travel on an ongoing basis. From cruising on the California coast up to wine country to a walking trip in Paris to a South American cruise, villages choose where they want to travel together.
TVSD offers a one-stop shopping approach to serving members. One call or email offers easy access to high-quality preferred service providers who have been carefully vetted by our staff. Most services are offered at a discount. Trained and licensed staff can provide information for any need. We do not provide medical services.
Members can access vetted providers online under "Find a Village Contractor". Office staff can provide vendors recommended by other Villagers. TVSD knows good referrals come from members.
Services that TVSD provides or has service providers for include the following: transportation, companionship, gardening, housekeeping, financial, groceries and meals preparation, home repair, legal, medical or care management, pet care, personal care and technology assistance.
In addition, local businesses provide discounts on restaurants, postal and computer services, dry cleaning, personal care, cards and gifts, hardware and car repair. With a licensed, experienced social worker on staff and others in the Village who are social workers, doctors, nurses and other professionals, you can be sure that you will get an immediate referral or advice that you need. Staff will act as a companion or advocate during a medical appointment or hospital stay and make sure you get home and have what you need during your recovery. When someone you know and love needs special care and assistance, the Village will pinpoint what you need, now. TVSD is sponsoring Healthier Living classes for the community with Aging and Independent Services and opened a Nurses' Clinic in the summer.
